The symposium begins with an asynchronous two-week period for selected readings and activities. The two weeks prepare for the live, online meeting with panelists who will present the most important research and then engage in a conversation with participants.

This Research Symposium will discuss research-based solutions to one of the most daunting problems in American higher education – the continued loss of graduates in STEM areas. How do we counter the precipitous drop in STEM enrollments and how does the research being conducted enable STEM online programs to educate the workforce needed in STEM?

The panelists are members of the HP Catalyst Initiative sponsored by Hewlett Packard. This network of educators explore new innovative approaches to teaching science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses online. These experts are also members Multiversity Consortium, lead by Sloan-C, is constructed around the idea of uplifting online STEM education worldwide.

Toward that end-point, our theme is understandings and disseminating effective practices that will enable STEM education online to grow and prosper. At the outset of the consortium formation, we chose to examine three specific areas of inquiry: Serious Games online, Laboratory learning online, Faculty Education and Student Interaction for online learning. These target areas were chosen specifically because of the great need to make progress in these areas. The Sloan-C STEM symposium will explore current innovative approaches to teaching STEM courses online. About the Virtual Symposia
The Sloan-C Online Research Education Symposia in 2012 are a series of 4 interactive presentations on research of critical importance to educators engaged in advancing online and blended education. The symposia will familiarize participants with the current research in each topic via multiple perspectives and emerging trends. Participants can pursue particular aspects of the topics via focused discussions and questions to the presenters.
